What is root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy is an advanced procedure designed to save a natural tooth from being destroyed due to severe decay. The procedure involves entering the inside of the tooth with tiny instruments to remove diseased pulp that can cause further damage to the tooth. The treatment can be done by a dentist, but in more severe cases the treatment is done by an experienced Redondo Beach endodontist, a specialist in advanced root canal therapy.
What are the advantages of root canal therapy?
Dentists worldwide agree that the first step in conservative dentistry is to save a natural tooth whenever possible. Root canals are a technique designed to do just that. In addition, root canals often alleviate the pain associated with toothaches caused by advanced stages of dental decay.
What does the treatment consist of?
Treatment usually only requires one visit, with multiple visits required only in the most severe cases. Using microscopic instruments, the endodontist enters the tooth, removes the decayed pulp, and cleans out the inside of the tooth. Then the inside of the tooth is sealed with a material called gutta percha. Finally, a follow-up visit is made with a restorative dentist and a crown is placed over the tooth to preserve it and ensure it lasts.
